HISPANICS,LATINOS AND SPANISH

For some reason, the population in the United States has been divided into as many groups as possible, and confusion between ethnicity and race is common.
An extremely high percentage of people refer to Spanish speaking people as "Hispanics" ignoring the fact, that as in he United States, Latin America's population is integrated by members of the four basic races : Black, White, Yellow and Red - (African, Caucasian, Asian and Native American.) In Latin America, the last group listed, (Red) constitutes the great majority of the population. They speak Spanish and they are Hispanic because over ninety percent are a mixture of Native and Spanish, or Spanish descendants. There are still some tribes of pure Latin American Natives - some speaking their own dialect besides Spanish. The rest of the Spanish speaking population south of the border, are immigrants, or immigrant's descendants, and members of the other races of the world; Asian, Caucasian and Black. When not mixed with Native blood, descendants of Caucasians/Europeans have been named "Criollos"; and a mixture of black with Europeans or Native Latin Americans are called "Mulatos". Belize, geographically a Central American Country and neighbor of Mexico and Guatemala, has such a large percentage of English and dialect speaking Afro-Belizean population, that they cannot be considered Hispanics. Brazil, in South America, is also not considered Hispanic. Races are the same as the rest of Latin American, but they speak Portuguese. An example of gross misuse of "Hispanics" as a race.

What does "Hispanic" means? Partly descendant or related in some way to Spain and the Spanish - which some people insist on calling "Spaniards;" only God knows why.- Have you ever heard of any "Englards" or "Frenchards" or Italiards"? Spanish are not Hispanics. They are the origin, to which Hispanics are related by several factors. Let's not confuse the corn with the "tortilla".

Finally, let me end this ethnic/racial comments with one more label: Latino. Of course it comes from the fact that Spanish is a Latin based language.- Latin is also the base for Italian, French and Portuguese; specially Italian.- Latin was, after all, the official language of the Roman Empire.
It will be a great day when we all are just called Americans.
